RYPEN 2018 Participants heading off

Students Zach Morete-Jackson and Romeo Te Paiho leave for the RYPEN 2018 programme held in Inglewood this Friday morning so a few of us will be down there to tautoko them and see them off.  Both Romeo and Zach were nominated by Craig McGhie and Latu Talu of the Cannons Creek Youth Charitable Trust.  Latu is also their boxing coach at the Billy Graham Boxing Academy, Cannons Creek.

We all met Romeo and his mum a couple of weeks ago and Zach's mum Leaha, as Zach was not able to attend the meeting.  Can't wait to hear their stories on their return as they start another journey in their life paths.

Guest Speaker Ace Tiatia
L to R:  President Kath Beattie, Ace Tiatia and his children, Alesana, Manaaki and Pyrenees

Four years on after establishing the Athletes Village Gym in Tawa, Ace Tiatia has added value by establishing a Trust that provides a service to youth including food for families in need, education around obesity and suicide.

"Make your bed in the morning" is a mantra that Ace Tiatia instills in the youth attending a fitness and health programme offered by the Adding Value Trust established by himself and his wife Bernie. The Trust provides 10 week block courses for a maximum of 50 youth from low socio-economic backgrounds.  Referrals come from police, contacts, word of mouth, local groups and health agencies.  But before youth can participate and attend, a criteria for Ace and his team meeting all parents and guardians, must be met.  This is all part of parents becoming the vision for their children.

Why "make your bed in the morning"? It's all about getting off to a good start, being organised, fresh, and prepared.  It's accomplishing your first task of the day, with a sense of pride and achivement.

Congradulations Ace, Rotary Porirua's contribution will provide sponsorship to a youth to attend the fitness and health programme under the Trust.
